For Bhalla

  • 1 cup urad daal (Mash daal)
  • ½ cup split mung beans (Moong Dal)
  • 3 slices of onion
  • 1 whole green chili
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tbsp water
  • ½ tsp cornstarch

For Assemble

  • 2 boiled potatoes
  • 1 cup boiled chickpeas (white Chana)
  • 1 cup phulkian
  • 3 cups Thick yogurt
  • Chaat masala as needed
  • Green chutney as needed
  • Tamarind chutney for garnishing


  • Wash and rinse the Urad Dal and Moong Dal until the water runs clear. Soak them in water for 1 hour.
  • After 1 hour, blend both lentils in a blender along with onion slices, green chili, salt, and 2 tbsp water until it becomes a smooth paste.
  • Add cornstarch to the paste and mix well.
  • Heat oil in a pan over medium flame. Take spoonfuls of the dal mixture and place them in the hot oil. Fry for about 5 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Place the fried bhallas in water for 5 minutes. Remove from water, press gently to remove excess water, and set aside.
  • To assemble, take a bowl and spread a layer of boiled potatoes at the bottom. Add boiled chickpeas on top of the potatoes, followed by phulkian.
  • Place the prepared bhallas on top. Sprinkle some salt and chaat masala over the bhallas.
  • Drizzle green chutney and thick cream yogurt on top. Garnish with tamarind chutney. Serve and enjoy your delicious Dahi Bhalla!
